I've never had any other breed of dog than a labrador, except now I have a beagle-dor and this crazy terrier guy. With labs, pretty much once they are housetrained, they are housetrained. And I "get" labradors. They don't play mind games with you or try to outsmart you, which is why I said I would never have a Jack Russell Terrier because I would never want a dog smarter than me.
So, that being said....When we aren't paying attention to Jack he does a little number just outside the bathroom in the hallway. Unpleasant. Quite. I've told my family that we've got to treat Jack like a puppy. That is, every time he eats, he goes outside. Every time he's done playing with the other dogs, he goes outside. Every time he's wandering around the house looking like he's lost, he goes outside. Viola! No more accidents.
So today, so far so good. No accidents unlike yesterday when there were several. He just needs to be gently reminded of his good-boy house manners.
I think that Jack would make an excellent therapy dog. You know, for nursing homes and the like. He's sweet, oh, so sweet, loves people (loves kids especially), he's light - which would be a plus if he put his front feet on some lil' ol' lady's lap. He's very huggable although, he could probably use a just little conditioner in his fur and maybe a light grooming.
There's a training program based out of Waukesha County to train you and your dog to become a therapy team. I saw it in the back of the Milwaukee Paper two Sundays ago. If you were interested you could probably "Google" it and get the info. Plus, they have a huge list of opportunities for people with therapy dogs to come to facilities.
Thanks again for reading and passing this along.
